TRANSIT INTERPRETATION (SAMPLE):

FOR FEBRUARY THROUGH DECEMBER 2004

by Brian Habit

Neptune squares off with his own position in your birth chart from roughly February 2004 till December 2006.

This is a square aspect. A transiting planet (Neptune) forms a 90-degree angle to a planet in your natal chart (also Neptune). Such a square aspect means friction, a conflict or clash, pressure to make a compromise or adjustment. Aspects that happen between a transiting planet and its natal position normally happen at about the same age for all of us. For example, this Neptunian square happens when we're around 41. In general, it's a time in a cycle of spirituality when we find that we’re very dissatisfied.

Neptune is the planet of “divine discontent”—that longing for a perfect condition that fallible humans in an imperfect world can never realize. During this aspect, we want a greater sense of meaning in our lives. It's as if we no longer believe in Santa Claus. Our faith in some previously held ideals collapses or declines. We need to either restore our faith in a more realistically sustainable way, or we need to start to put our faith in something else altogether. Either way, it's a time of spiritual work.

Neptune is currently moving through your 1st house of style, so matters related to the general style with which you present yourself to the world are under pressure to change. In your birth chart, Neptune rules your 2nd house of resources. That’s where we hopefully prove ourselves to ourselves. We develop a sense of self-confidence, a belief that we can handle whatever life dishes out, that we’ve got what it takes to make it in this world. Given that 1st-house changes are putting pressure on your 2nd house ruler, I’d say that it’s time to adjust your style, so that it helps you present your idealism and imagination to others in a way that is more “you,” and it helps you glide through the world more comfortably, not so troubled by self-doubts or second-guessing yourself.

And 9th-house experiences can serve as the vehicle through which you exhibit a more graceful imaginative style. That’s where your natal Neptune lies. Ninth-house experiences mean learning, traveling, promoting, publishing, or otherwise getting out of intellectual, spiritual or geographical ruts.

Neptune relates to sensitivity, and sensitivity without exercising care can slide into vulnerability. Vulnerability can take various forms. We can be vulnerable to other people or to physically debilitating conditions, for example. Sometimes people are victimized during this transit, and sometimes they victimize others. There’s often an element of naiveté, poor judgment, self-destructiveness, or unintended consequences involved.

Jane works with a celebrity, and she has the misfortune to be standing nearby when someone with a mental illness decides to try to take the celebrity out of action.

Malcolm has become disillusioned with the improprieties of an activist organization to which he belongs. He renounces the group and leaves himself vulnerable to being undermined. Then some of his former colleagues conspire against him and ruin his career.

George has developed a steady drug habit. Then one day he has a heart attack. George gets treatment afterwards, and he figures that his drug use weakened his heart so much that he set himself up for trouble.

Josefina is a politician. She’s so concerned about whether untrustworthy people have infiltrated the government that she makes unfounded accusations about some of her colleagues. She not only ruins their careers but eventually also loses credibility herself.

Moses works in a water processing plant. He discovers a clog in a pipe and acts to remove it. According to safety regulations, Moses’ supervisor is supposed to turn off the water flow before Moses removes the clog, but the supervisor doesn’t do this. The pipe bursts, spewing scalding water on Moses.

And then there’s James. He has suffered health problems and economic adversity in recent years. His sense of desperation and anger has built up to the point that he looks for enemies where they don’t exist. He needs someone to blame, so he lashes out at complete strangers, causing a lot of pain for both them and himself.

Consider how you might exercise poor judgment or set yourself up for a fall now, especially in connection with your style of speaking or carrying yourself, your financial affairs, and the respect that you show for your own abilities. Imagining some of the ways that this might come up--and then acting to head them off--will help you avoid the troubles that some people experience during this transit.

Now, even though your idealism is under a lot of stress now, and even though there are certain hazards to avoid, it’s still possible to make something good of this period.

In many cases, people who accomplish something satisfying during this transit do so by standing by their ideals during a time of adversity. There’s often a spiritual element involved. For example, a woman might get through a time of loss by drawing on her religious faith. The kind of adversity that people face varies from one person to another.

Suzanne is a professional dancer, and she’s been suffering with an arthritic hip for some time. She has hip replacement surgery now, and even though she can’t dance for some time, she keeps sight of her vision, her dream of returning to ballet. Eventually, she will go back to dancing to thunderous applause. For now, her faith in her dream sustains her.

Quincy has a major illness that requires surgery now, too. Against the odds, he not only survives but also goes on to resume a full and varied career. The experience prompts him to rededicate himself to what he believes in. He takes a more spiritual view of his life, hugging everyone whom he cares about often, with a greater appreciation of both them and of life.

Rajiv comes from a family of politicians. His mother dies in office, and he takes over for her. Even though he’s sad about losing his mother, he’s also moving forward in his political career. It’s a bittersweet time for him.

It’s also a bittersweet time for Emmeline. She finds herself alone suddenly with several children to raise, and she’s never worked outside of the home. She rises to the occasion, getting a job, and once she’s spending more time out in the world, she tunes in to the social and political condition of women as a whole. Eventually, Emmeline will become a leader, fighting to improve conditions for a lot of people. That’s her dream. It’s a new one that’s just starting to stir insider of her…

John holds public office, and his dreams involve being a politician. The test that he faces now is getting re-elected, but he withstands the test and goes on to serve the public in office another day.

George knows that he’s been drinking too much for far too long. Now, he faces the challenge of his own bad habit, and he decides to abstain from alcohol altogether.

Not everyone who experiences success during this transit is confronted by major adversity. In some cases, it’s more of a straight shot to a magical dream-come-true time.

For example, Angelica is an idealistic radical activist. She has “fought the good fight” for some time, and now she writes a book about her reflections on it all. She gets it published, and it quickly becomes a best seller.

Michael is also a writer, but he’s been struggling for years to stay afloat. He’s been working as a dishwasher and sleeping in his car. Then a friend who has some major “pull” calls Michael, saying he wants to adapt his unpublished manuscript into a major motion picture. The picture becomes an Oscar winner, and Michael’s career is suddenly up and running.

Milton is a comedian. He’s already become quite successful as an entertainer, but then he makes some off-hand comments to viewers that capture the imagination of the public. Suddenly he becomes an overnight sensation.

Do you have an old dream that you want to keep alive? Then what might you accomplish now by reinventing your faith in it? How could you stand firm in the face of adversity?

If you have a brand-new dream, one that’s just starting to stir in you, what is it? How could you get it off to a good start?
