LOIS RODDEN: KEEPING ASTROLOGERS FED THROUGH QUALITY RESEARCH

by Brian Habit

December 20, 2002

What leads a person to devote umpteen hours of her life to researching astrological information and sharing the fruits of her research with her colleagues? For Lois Rodden, the motivating force seems to be a need to blaze a new trail, fueled by the drive and originality of a Mars-Uranus conjunction in her natal chart. This longtime astrological researcher and writer received the Regulus Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s United Astrology Conference for her tireless work to collect, categorize and describe accurate birth information for tens of thousands of people. To get a better sense of Rodden, let’s take a brief look at this renowned astrologer’s natal chart, including the Mars-Uranus conjunction.

An Idea Person-and More

Lois Rodden was born on May 22, 1928, at 12:27 am MST in Lang, Canada (49 N 56, 104 W 23). (Click here to see Rodden's birth chart.) Both Rodden’s Sun and Ascendant are in air signs-Gemini and Aquarius, respectively. That combination suggests curiosity, clear perception, communication-and the risks of restless detachment. With an Aquarius “wrapper,” she needs to share her truth (however unusual or radical it might seem to those who would defend traditional practices), in order to move comfortably through the world. To really come into her own and shine, she must welcome a wealth of new information and communicate her ideas clearly to others. This is shown by the house placement of the Sun and the elements of the Sun and Ascendant.

Rodden’s Moon lies in watery Cancer, adding a very contrasting note of reflection and sensitivity. In the fifth house of creative self-expression, the Moon complements the third-house dimension of the Sun: it also suggests a need to share her inner workings. However, the Moon introduces an instinctive cautiousness that we haven’t seen already. Rodden’s development of a coherent, comfortable sense of identity and style depends on her self-establishment in the role of communicator, a role through which she can express her emotional need to nurture others by creating tangible manifestations of her ideas. Put simply, she resembles a teacher with the spirit of a psychotherapist, dressed in a revolutionary’s clothing.

The Drive to Pioneer

Looking beyond Rodden’s Sun-Moon-Ascendant combination, we find she has a stellium of Mars, Jupiter and Uranus in pioneering Aries. With Mars and Uranus in Aries in her first house, she needs to project her initiative and innovativeness in a trailblazing way in order to act with confidence.

This conjunction trines her Midheaven, so such an innovative style could easily support Rodden as she pursues her aspirations and public achievement. In addition, this vibrant, independent manner excites (sextiles) Rodden’s sense of identity (Sun). She needs to feed the vitality of her third-house Gemini Sun by soaking up life’s rich variety through gathering and sharing information. Furthermore, her pioneering style is in a state of ongoing dynamic tension (square aspect) with her instinctive inclination (Moon) to nurture others (Cancer) through her creative self-expression (5th house). Pluto conjoins the Moon, adding to this picture the depth and intensity that is required for success in research. Rodden’s inclination to nurture others in creative ways is intertwined with her urge to share some special wisdom and make a great difference in the world, thus fulfilling her destiny.

Roads Not Taken

Did Rodden have to become a research astrologer? No, she had alternatives.

For starters, she could have created a magazine for single parents or for people who survive cancer. (She herself has been both.) This would satisfy her needs to shine as a communicator, to nurture others in powerfully creative ways, and to act with spunk and initiative. It would also fulfill the bright potential of her natal chart. Other, darker paths were also available to her. For example, Rodden could have become a reckless con-artist, thereby expressing her chart’s destructive potential to communicate with charm and abuse power erratically, to surrender to an appetite for emotional control.

Fortunately, to the benefit of many budding and longtime stargazers, Rodden made a creative choice. She dedicated her career to providing astrologers with a bountiful supply of high-quality data and other informative resources.
