Libra versus Scorpio: Born on a Cusp?

Brian, I have been casually interested in astrology for some time now. Throughout my research I have discovered that I may be a "cuspian". From what I have

read my birthday falls on or close to a cusp period (October 21st). Some experts say that I am a Scorpio whereas most others call me a Libra. Although it may sound Libran to ask this... couldn't I be both? Is there

anything important that I should know about being cuspian if that is the case? Perhaps you can help balance my scales in this regard or at least take a good stab at it. I was born October 21, 1979, 5:05 PM, at 5:05 pm EDT,  August 15, 1962, at 7:30 am GMT +1 hour, 43 39 N, 79 23 W.

The Sun changes signs at a particular moment each year, though the exact time and day of that moment varies within the range of a few days from year to year. On the year that you were born, the Sun did not enter Scorpio until sometime on or about October 23. Therefore, your Sun sign is definitely Libra. In your birth chart, the Sun is at 27 degrees 52 minutes Libra. (One minute = 1/60 of a degree. There are 30 degrees in each sign. 30 degrees Libra is the same as 0 degrees Scorpio.)

Now, while the Sun is in Libra in your chart, other planets are in various other signs in it. Just like you have a Sun sign, you have a Moon sign, a Mercury sign, etc.

You have the Sun and Pluto in Libra. The Sun represents how you form an identity for yourself. It represents your general vitality, the life force in you. Pluto symbolizes how we might assert ourselves in a transpersonal way, in a way that affects many others’ lives. Pluto represents that part of us that wants to transform ourselves or the world around us, that wants to do something “important.” Pluto represents a sense of mission or destiny.

In order to develop what the Sun and Pluto symbolizes, you should tap into your natural Libran strengths (social gracefulness, an ability to appreciate alternative perspectives on the same subject, and use Libran strategies (aesthetic creation or appreciation, stress management, social activity) to help you ultimately achieve a certain degree of harmony. By harmony, I mean bringing separate parts or elements into some sort of pleasing or elegant arrangement, whether they’re individuals, groups of people, aesthetic components (such as colors and shapes), or some other types of elements. Avoid Libran hazards, such as endless indecision and sacrificing your integrity for the sake of keeping the superficial appearance of peace with someone else.

Again, use a Libran approach to develop a strong sense of identity (your Sun) and to "make your mark on the world" (develop your Pluto).

Now, while you have the Sun and Pluto in Libra, you also have the Moon, Mercury, Venus, and Uranus in Scorpio. That's a big emphasis on Scorpio!

The Moon represents the emotional and magical aspect of your psyche, your general mood or temperament. She also indicates the sort of unconscious emotional needs that motivate your behavior. What matters to the Sun is how to feel sane. For the Moon, what matters is how to feel content.

Mercury represents your intelligence; your transmission of information through speaking, writing or teaching; and your reception of information through observation, listening, reading or learning.

Venus represents our aesthetic tastes and perceptions or how we feel moved when we see beauty, such as the beauty found in nature. She’s how we relax and have fun. In addition, Venus indicates how we form and maintain supportive relationships.

Uranus represents how we become individuals rather than endlessly repeating only those behaviors that society has taught us. Through individuation we distinguish who we are from who everyone else wants us to be. Uranus also indicates our unique brand of creative genius.

To develop these parts of yourself, tap into your natural Scorpionic strengths and use Scorpionic strategies so that you can engage deeply in life, as if every day were your last. Draw on your instinctive introspectiveness self-analysis, your intense, focused attention, your ability to sense other people's motivations. Act like a detective, a psychologist, a hypnotist, or a sorcerer. Try to avoid Scorpionic hazards, such as trying to ignore what you're feeling and becoming compulsive, or dwelling on what you're feeling and becoming obsessed.

Again, take a Scorpionic approach to developing and expressing your sensitivity and imagination (Moon), your intellectual and communicative abilities (Mercury), your social and aesthetic style (Venus), and your sense of individuality (Uranus).

Returning to your original question, your Sun is in Libra, but a lot of your chart lies in Scorpio, so in a sense you are a hybrid of these two signs. The more you can find outlets that draw on both your Libran and Scorpionic nature, the more satisfied you'll be.

For example, you're like a host, an artist, or a diplomat (with Sun in Libra), who has the soul of a psychologist, a detective, or a sorcerer (with Moon in Scorpio). You might become a counselor. That would draw on Libra's social abilities and feed Scorpio's need to dig beneath the surface to get to underlying truth. You might paint pictures or compose songs (Libra) about intense, socially taboo subjects (Scorpio), to provoke strong reactions and reflection in others.
