Building a House

Brian, I launched the building of a new house. Do you look at the chart for this event with the same eyes/mind that you do a chart for a person? For example, what does the Ascendant bring to the overall flavor of the chart? What do you think about this chart?  The house building was launched on July 1, 2003, at 10:00 am GMT +3 hours, 18 S 55, 47 E 31.

Perhaps the single most important difference between event charts and birth charts pertains to applying aspects. In an event chart, only those aspects that have not yet become exact (“applying aspects”) are relevant. Those that are moving away from being exact (“separating”) are not important, whereas in a birth chart they would be significant.

The chart for this event contains one very important unfavorable feature: a Void-of-Course Moon. As the fastest-moving planet, the Moon is the most important consideration in an electional chart. In this chart, the Moon is Void of Course (VOC), meaning that it will not form any major aspects (conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines or oppositions) to any other planets before it leaves its current sign. That’s a no-no in an electional chart because when the Moon is VOC, the desired outcome rarely occurs. Routine events seem to often go according to plan during a VOC Moon, but new matters seldom do. I don't want to encourage you to have a gloom-and-doom attitude. Doing that would, if anything, decrease your chances for success in building the house. On the other hand, I didn't invent this rule about the VOC Moon. It's something that's been around for centuries, developed based on other people's experiences.

Apart from the VOC Moon, the chart looks very favorable. The Moon is waxing, but it’s at least 12 hours after the New Moon, and it does not square any planets. It’s also in Cancer, the sign of homes, supporting the matter in question. The Sun, Moon, Venus and Jupiter all lie above the horizon. Saturn lies in an angular house (the 10th), which is usually unfavorable. However, since the chart is for building, a Saturn-ruled event, that’s fine. Uranus and Mars lie in a cadent (non-angular house—the 6th house), and that’s good, too. Virgo, a mutable sign, is rising, and that supports any matter in which flexibility would be important. I would have aimed for a fixed sign to promote stability, but Virgo is also a practical earth sign, and practicality would certainly be helpful for such a concrete endeavor. Sagittarius lies on the cusp (beginning) of the 4th house (ruling the matter at hand), and its ruler Jupiter trines Pluto in the 4th. Having a trine from Jupiter is priceless.

Returning to the issue of the VOC Moon, I can only say that perhaps your case will prove to be exceptional. In the future, if you want a favorable chart for a major event, I recommend that you ask an astrologer to do an electional for you before you finalize the date and time. That would allow you to use astrology in a way that is most helpful to you.
