LOTT'S LOSS: POOR
JUDGMENT UNDER NEPTUNE
by Brian Habit
December 20, 2002
U.S. Senator Leader
Trent Lott seems to have chosen to exercise poor judgment during a Neptunian
transit to his natal Mercury, leading to his loss of his seat as incoming
Senate majority leader.
Lott's Power Goes "Poof"
On December 5,2002,
Lott stated that the country would have avoided "all these problems" if
then-segregationist Strom Thurmond had been elected president in 1948.
Lott made the comment during a 100th birthday celebration for Senator
Thurmond, who preparing to retire after nearly 48 years in the Senate. It
was broadcast live on C-SPAN. The remarks drew a strong rebuke from, among
others, President Bush, who called them "offensive" and "wrong." Afterwards,
Lott’s political standing quickly eroded in Washington because of the
controversy surrounding his praise of Thurmond's comments. Fifteen days
later, Lott resigned as Senate majority leader, saying that he would retain
his Senate seat.
When Lott made his
comments, transiting Neptune squared his natal Mercury. In addition, Uranus
was squaring his natal opposition between Venus and Saturn-Uranus
opposition. These set the stage for what occurred.
Then, transiting
Saturn and Mercury triggered Lott's natal Jupiter-Neptune square as they
moved to oppose each other the next day. Saturn was already squaring his
Neptune by the time this occurred. Then Mercury entered the scene, squaring
his Neptune and opposing his Jupiter. Other transits in effect at the time
of Lott's remarks are listed below. (These exclude transits to Lott's natal
Moon, Ascendant and MC, since his birth time is unknown. Lott was born on
October 9, 1941, in Grenada, Mississippi,
US.)

Three Men and a Neptune Transit
For comparison
purposes, one might look at how other people whose natal charts are similar
to Lott's chart have acted during the same transits (Neptune squaring their
Mercury, etc). For example, U.S. civil rights leader Jesse Jackson was born
on October 8, 1941, and U.S. popular singer-songwriter Paul Simon was born
on October 13, 1941 (both within several days of Lott). Let's look briefly
at the natal charts and transits, especially with respect to Mercury, of
each of these three figures. Without a birth time for Lott, we know less
about his natal chart and transits than those of Jackson or Simon. Still,
comparing them could shed some light on the significance of transiting
Neptune squaring one's natal Mercury.
Lott's natal
Sun is in collaborative Libra, his Moon is in communicative Gemini (unless
he was born very early in the day, in which case it's in steady Taurus), and
his rising sign is unknown. With double air, he needs to think, communicate,
and interact, but considering ideas may come more naturally for him than
considering feelings about ideas. His natal Mercury squares transformative
Pluto in dramatic Leo, but the house positions and rulerships of these
planets are unknown. There's some tension involving his thinking and
communication, but there may or may not be much flowing ease with it. From
roughly April 2001 till January 2004, Neptune challenges his Mercury. This
was exact in March and July of this year. It will be exact again in January.
In the case of
Jesse Jackson, his Sun is in collaborative Libra, his Moon is in steady
Taurus, and his Ascendant is in ambitious Capricorn. A double dose of earth
offers practicality to airy communicativeness. Natally, Jackson's Mercury
(ruling his sectors of self-expression and instinctive reactions to
hot-button issues) is in his house of horizon-expanding experiences,
conjoining his Midheaven and squaring Pluto. Pluto, ruling his career
sector, is in his house of intimacy. He, too, has tension with his Mercury
function but without flowing trines or stimulating sextiles to it. Neptune
is now passing through Jackson's personality sector, squaring his Mercury
from March 2001 till December 2003 (exact in March and July of this year and
January of next year).
In the case of
Paul Simon, his Sun is also in collaborative Libra, his Moon is in
impressionable Cancer, and dutiful Virgo is rising. Like Jackson, he has
air, earth, and water represented, offering some realism and sensitivity as
well as communicativeness. His Mercury, ruling his personality and career
sectors, is in his house of communication. Mercury is heavily aspected,
opposing his Saturn-Uranus in late Taurus and his Gemini Midheaven, squaring
his Ascendant, trine the Moon-Pluto, and sextile Neptune, offering lots of
flow, stimulation, and challenge in communication. Neptune is now drifting
between Simon's creativity sector and house of responsibilities, squaring
his Mercury from about March 2002 till January 2005 (exact in March and
August 2003 and January 2004).
I will leave
it for others to research and compare how Lott, Jackson and Simon have spent
their time with this baby (transiting Neptune squaring natal Mercury).
Who Will Fill the Void?
As of this
writing, Senator Bill Frist seems favored to replace Lott as Senate majority
leader, according to news reports. Frist, a surgeon who was first elected to
public office when he won a Senate seat in 1995, was born on February 22,
1952, in Nashville, Tennessee, US (time unknown).
Frist is going through a very Jupiterian period currently. The most exact
relatively long-term transit to his natal chart is Jupiter square his natal
Mars. On January 21, 2003, he will experience two exact transits that are
especially significant now, during this relative lack of longer-term events
involving other transiting planets. Jupiter will trine his natal Jupiter,
and Mars will square his natal Sun.
