FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What
is your approach to astrology?
My mission as an astrologer is to help you become happier and more
spiritually fulfilled.
To achieve my mission, I encourage you to play an active role in your life
and to use the power at your disposal to create the life that you want.
How do I do this?
- By
telling you about
the potentials that you are capable of developing within yourself.
|
- By telling you
what sorts of issues you can expect to face in the future.
|
- By telling you
about the healthy and not-so-healthy choices that are available to
you, and what you can expect to happen, depending on which choices you
make.
|
I
derive information about your potentials, and issues, and choices from my
interpretation of the symbols of astrology.
I
approach astrology as a tool that can help you accomplish what you want.
I
do not believe that the planets make things happen. I do not believe that they
keep things from happening. I believe that you make things happen, and I
make things happen.
I consider my
theoretical orientation to be largely evolutionary. I subscribe to the
principles of evolutionary astrology as laid out by Steven Forrest and
Jeffrey Wolf Green at
http://www.stevenforrest.com/evolutionary.html.
However, I do
not expect any client to believe in reincarnation. I don't
necessarily refer much to the idea of reincarnation in my work. I do
not, necessarily use the same methods as Green. For example, I don't
currently analyze the relationship between Pluto and the lunar nodes. And I
would say that my style is much less esoteric than that of Green.
What
do you believe?
Let me start by saying
what I do NOT believe.
I do not believe that you can make absolutely anything and
everything that you want happen. For example, I am 5 feet 7 inches tall,
and I could not make myself taller even if I wanted to do that. Even if I
wanted to become a star basketball player, and I tried as well as I possibly
could to make it happen, it is just not likely to happen.
I do not believe that absolutely anything and everything that happens to
you is something that you have chosen to happen to you. Some people
would say that, at a soul level you chose the life circumstances into which
you were born, before you were born. Some people would say that you chose
everything that would happen to you during your life.
That sort of thinking aside, I do not believe that you chose to be born into
whatever kind of family circumstances you were born into. If you were born
with a hereditary condition, I do not believe you chose that. If the economy
takes a major downturn during your life, or a natural disaster strikes, or
war touches you and thousands of people around you, I do not believe that
you chose for any of those things to happen. I do not believe that you could
keep such things from happening.
What I do
believe is that most (but not all) of what you experience is a result of
choices that you yourself make. The choices that you made in the past
affect the experiences that you have today. They shape the choices that are
available to you now. And the choices that you make now affect which choices
will be available to you in the future.
I believe that you
make choices in whatever environment surrounds you. You do not live in a
vacuum. The people and
the circumstances that surround you do affect you. There is no denying that.
At the same time,
you also affect them. And both of these things happen simultaneously,
continuously, like two dancers who perform a never-ending dance with each
other.
I believe that it is in such a dance
with life that you make things happen.
I
assume that you have the freedom to choose whether
to act in cooperation with the forces that are symbolized by astrology.
I
explore this possibility with you through The Proud Phoenix: “Astrology to
Help You Transform Your Life.”

What is your background?
I
began my interest in astrology in 1977
at the age of 13, when I decided there had to be something more to it than
what appeared in the daily newspaper column.
I
checked out all the local public library’s offerings on the subject,
including Jess Stearn’s "A Time for Astrology." Soon afterwards,
I started
building my own library on astrology: about natal charts, transits, synastry,
etc.
Primarily self-taught in
astrology, I studied with Jodie Forrest, co-author of Skymates: The
Astrology of Love, Sex, and Intimacy. In July 2001
I started providing mini-interpretations
on the Astrology Zone message board. In November 2001, I started an
astrological forum at Delphi.com. In January 2003, I launched the Proud Phoenix website. I live in Durham, North Carolina, in the southeastern U.S.
I was a member of the
first graduating class of the North Carolina School of Science and
Mathematics in 1982. In 1984-1985, I studied in Seville, Spain, and in 1986,
I received a Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and Spanish from the University
of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In 1997 I received a Master of Social
Work from East Carolina University in
Greenville, North Carolina. In addition to working as an astrologer, I work
as an office administrator for Habitat for Humanity in Durham, North
Carolina, US.
At various points in my life,
I have:
-
provided brief solution-focused psychotherapy for individuals and
couples
|
-
provided crisis intervention counseling for mental health clients and
the general public
|
-
conducting neuropsychological evaluations for adult psychiatric
patients and other adult patients
|
-
provided a variety of services for gay, lesbian,
bisexual and transgendered adults and youth
|
-
trained and coordinated
volunteers for a crisis intervention hotline
|
-
provided interpretation and
translation services for Spanish-speaking clients at a nonprofit law
firm for victims of domestic violence

How can I find out
my birth time?
In order to allow a thorough and accurate chart
interpretation, you need an accurate birth time.
To get information about your birth time,
try contacting the appropriate government agency or hospital for the
state/country where you were born. See if they have a recorded birth time.
Sometimes a government agency records the time. Sometimes a hospital records
it.
If you were born in the US,
the state may have recorded the birth time even if it is NOT on your birth
certificate.
If you were adopted,
then you may be able to find out a birth time by doing research on the
Internet.
If none of the above turns up a birth time,
then you could investigate other possible sources of an exact or approximate
time, such as relatives' memories, baby books, relatives' diaries, and
hospital records.
For more information about any of the above,
visit
http://www.sevenpawspress.com/birthcert.html (It
also includes limited information for people born in a few European
countries.)
If you have tried all of the
above, but you still do not have an exact time,
then you could have an astrologer do what is called chart rectification.
Bear in mind that chart rectification may or may not result in an accurate
time.
Chart rectification
basically involves coming up with a list of 10 or 20 life events that you
consider significant and the month, date (or which half of month applies),
and year for each event. Once that’s done, the astrologer uses predictive
techniques to work backward and, through trial and error, determine a birth
time, the chart for which would have accurately predicted the timing of the
given events. The narrower the range of possible birth times when one starts
trying to rectify a chart, the greater the likelihood that the rectification
will be accurate. If the range of possible times is greater than four hours,
an astrologer may or may not be willing to try to rectify a chart.
Will You Do an Interpretation by Telephone?
No, and here's why:
It is my understanding that a person
generally retains no more than 20% of what he or she hears, after an
interpretation has ended. My interpretations are packed with points and
examples. They take a fair amount of time to absorb, and that's true
even when I send them in chunks in writing, over a period of time. I
don't think it would work for someone to try to stay on the phone for an
hour and a half or longer with me, and to absorb all of that, in one fell
swoop.
Now, I could record a telephone
interpretation, and then you could review the recording afterwards, to
absorb what you didn't catch the first time around; but if you have
questions about what I've said here or there, I wouldn't be able to respond
to them as we went along, during the interpretation itself. By doing my
interpretation in writing, it gives you more of an opportunity to reflect on
what I've said, decide what you're unclear about, and formulate and ask your
questions.
