ELEMENTS OF THE ZODIAC
SIGNS (Part One)

Each of the 12 zodiac
signs is associated with one of four elements: fire, earth, air or water. By
considering the similarity or difference between the elements of two
specific signs, you can get a quick sense of some of the dynamics in a
person's birth chart or in a relationship between two people.
In this article, I'll
provide a "cheat sheet" of key words that are related to each of the four
elements. Then, in later parts of this series, I'll offer some examples of how to apply
this in natal astrology.
The Fire Signs: Aries, Leo,
and Sagittarius
Here
are some key words and definitions for fire signs.

ardent: feeling intense enthusiasm

creative: using the imagination to produce new ideas or things

energetic: showing great vitality or force
-
enthusiastic: showing excited interest
-
fiery: prone to sudden extremes of emotion
-
idealistic: aspiring to superior standards or principles
-
impulsive: inclined to act on sudden urges or desires
-
independent: inclined to act without consultation with or guidance
from others
-
inspirational: stimulating people into greater efforts or more
enthusiastic or more creative behavior
-
intense: showing strong, deeply felt emotions in a serious way
-
optimistic: taking a hopeful, positive view of future outcomes
-
romantic: characterized by adventure, excitement, the potential for
heroic achievement, and the exotic
-
self-confident: believing in one’s ability to succeed
-
self-motivated: able to make plans and get things done without being
directed by others
-
self-sufficient: able to live independently of others
-
spontaneous: unrestrained or uninhibited
-
stimulating: causing somebody to become interested in or excited about
something
-
subjective: based on one’s opinions or feelings rather than on facts
or evidence
The Earth Signs: Taurus,
Virgo, and Capricorn
Here are some key words
and definitions for earth signs.

conservative: in favor of preserving the status quo and traditional
values and customs, and against abrupt change

dependable: able to be trusted to act in the way required or expected
-
down-to-earth: practical and realistic
-
earthy: having or showing a hearty, cheerful, no-nonsense acceptance
of the realities and facts of life
-
enduring: patient or tolerant despite many difficulties
-
exacting: demanding hard work and great effort
-
materialistic: concerned with material wealth and possessions at the
expense of spiritual and intellectual values
-
methodical: systematic, careful, or attentive to detail
-
orderly: organized in a neat, sensible, or proper way
-
patient: able to endure delay without becoming annoyed or upset or to
persevere calmly when faced with difficulties
-
persistent: tenaciously or obstinately continuing despite problems or
difficulties
-
practical: good at managing matters and dealing with problems and
difficulties
-
productive: making something abundantly and efficiently
-
realistic: seeking what is achievable or possible, based on known
facts
-
recuperative: capable of recovering from illness or other setbacks
-
security-minded: inclined to attend to considerations of safety
-
sensual: inclined to experience physical pleasure
-
stable: having a calm and steady temperament rather than being
excitable or given to apparently irrational behavior
-
thorough: extremely careful and accurate
The Air Signs: Gemini, Libra
and Aquarius
Here are some key words
and definitions for air signs.

abstract reasoning: the use of logical thinking in order to find
results or draw conclusions, based on general principles or theories
rather than on specific instances

broad-minded: tolerant of a wide range of ideas and behavior
-
communicative: giving or exchanging information

conceptualizing: arriving at a broad abstract idea or a generalization
-
cooperating: working or acting together to achieve a common aim
-
detached: unaffected by emotional involvement or any form of bias
-
idealistic: aspiring to live in accordance with high standards or
principles

impersonal: making a person feel insignificant and ignored as an
individual
-
indecisive: unable or reluctant to choose
-
intellectual: involving abstract thinking and reasoning rather than
emotions
-
interacting: communicating or working together
-
logical: based on facts, clear rational thought, and sensible
reasoning

objective: free of any bias or prejudice caused by personal feelings;
based on facts rather than thoughts or opinions
-
observant: looking at carefully
-
questioning: eager for knowledge
-
synthesizing: combining elements into a new whole
-
talkative: inclined to express readily through speech
-
unprejudiced: having opinions that are not based on insufficient
knowledge, irrational feelings, or stereotypes
-
unrealistic: not taking into account the way the world actually is and
how events are likely to happen
The Water Signs: Cancer,
Scorpio, and Pisces
Here are some key words
and definitions for water signs.

dependent: not able to live without others’ support

easy influenced by one’s environment

emotional: easily affected by affective states of consciousness

empathetic: able to identify with and understand another person’s
feelings feeling: easily or strongly affected by emotion

imaginative: good at thinking of new ideas or at visualizing things
that have not been seen or experienced

intuitive: knowing instinctively without having to discover or
perceive something

nurturing: caring for and encouraging to thrive

passive: uninvolved

personal: relating to a particular individual
-
protective: preventing from being harmed
-
receptive: quick to take in stimuli
-
responsive: reacting quickly or strongly
-
secretive: unwilling to reveal information
-
sensitive: (1) tactful and sympathetic in relation to the feelings of
others; (2) easily offended or annoyed
-
sentimental: expressing tender, often romantic, feelings
-
subjective: based on one’s opinions or feelings rather than on facts
or evidence
-
susceptible to states of feeling
-
sustaining: emotionally supportive
-
vulnerable: open to emotional harm
