HOW TO ACCESS A PROUD PHOENIX CHAT ROOM

Directions for how to do this vary depending on whether you use AOL or not.

If You Use AOL

Before you can log into the Proud Phoenix chat rooms, you may need to follow one or two extra steps. For security reasons, AOL has a system whereby the user's IP address changes every few seconds. The Proud Phoenix chat rooms rely upon a constant IP address for each session, so some versions of AOL will work with them, and others will not.

If you are unable to enter a chat room with your version of AOL, try this:

1. a. Change your internet security settings in AOL to "low." Then try the chat room again.

OR

b. If that doesn't solve the problem, connect to AOL as usual. Then, instead of using AOL's built-in browser, open a "stand-alone" browser (such as Internet Explorer or Netscape). This should definitely solve the problem.  

2. Then follow the directions that appear immediately below (under "If You Do Not Use AOL").

If You Do Not Use AOL

1. Go to http://www.proudphoenix.com/chat for the chat rooms.

2. a. If you have never used a chat room here: Go to the top of the screen (“main screen”). Click on “Tutorial.” (This should open an additional window on your screen.) Read or at least skim the information about how to use the chat features.

b. If you have already used a chat room here: Skip to 3 (b) below.

3. a. If you have not registered here yet: Look for "Account Management" on the screen. Below it, register and log in. (Even if you have already registered on the message board, you will need to register here. This system is completely separate.)

OR

b. If you have already registered here: Enter your username and password. Then press the “Enter” key on your keyboard, or point and click your mouse on the “chat” button toward the bottom of the screen.

4. Unless you changed the default settings while you were on the main screen, you should be taken automatically to the Default chat room (“main chat room”). Once there, you should see an automatic greeting on the screen, such as “Welcome to our chat. Please obey the net etiquette while chatting: try to be pleasant and polite.” To chat, point and click your mouse in the short, wide white box toward the bottom of the screen. Type a sentence or two. Then press the “Enter” key on your keyboard, or point and click your mouse on the “chat” button toward the bottom of the screen.
