BIRTH CHART
INTERPRETATION (SAMPLE)
by Brian Habit
You have Mars in Virgo in the
5th house.
With Mars,
the mental function that we’re talking about is your development
of will, courage and assertiveness. It’s how you deal with
perceived threats to your existence. The Red Planet is your
killer instinct and your survival instinct. Mars represents your
anger and your very will to live.
You have
Mars in methodical, practical, idealistic Virgo—the sign of the
Servant, the Analyst, and the Craftsperson. Mars tends to be
disciplined in Virgo, inclined to put great effort into
achieving ideals. By sign, Mars indicates the sort of
assertiveness training in which the cosmos has enrolled you.
Virgo is here to become the paragon of some principle that’s
held near and dear, whether the principle is free enterprise,
service, a sound mind in a sound body, or something else.
Therefore, your assertiveness training relates to whatever
principle you stand for and the methods you use to advance it.
That’s where you’re learning to stand up for yourself, to go
toe-to-toe with others. With Mars in Virgo, you can expect to
face challenges related to closing the gap between how the world
is now and how much better you see that it could become.
Where do
you especially need to face such challenges? In your 5th house,
the house of self-expression.
We all
need to renew ourselves. We all need to play and indulge
ourselves. We need to be expressive and creative, and that’s
what the 5th house is about. Creativity is something very broad
here. Being creative could mean acting, or dancing, or painting,
but it doesn’t have to mean that. It could be any activity in
which we make some energetic, striking show of what’s inside
yourself or what you value. The 5th house represents how you
express yourself creatively, whether it is by having a child or
developing an idea (a “brainchild”) or a hobby. It’s how you
take a creative risk, whether it is a financial risk (through
gambling, or investment, or some entrepreneurial activity), or
it’s an interpersonal risk (through being romantic with someone
or showing your spontaneous side to someone). The 5th house is
your experience of pleasure and playfulness.
With Mars
in Virgo in the 5th house, you need creative pursuits that allow
you to act in pioneering, daring, or adventurous ways. They need
to be the sort of activities that engage your fighting spirit
and forcefulness and motivate you to take risks romantically,
financially, or in some other respect. To develop your will, to
express yourself with confidence and vital energy, you’ll have
to stand your ground about how you give tangible expression to
what’s going on inside yourself. You can count on locking horns
with others eventually about 5th-house matters, such as how you
spend your free time, or how you raise your children, or whom
you date. Maybe you and your romantic partner have arguments due
to sexual incompatibility or substance abuse, or you bravely
support your partner while he battles an illness. Maybe you
decide to drop out of school so that you can pursue some
creative dream in another way. One way or another, you’ll have
to assert yourself in this department of your life, but that’s
so that you can sharpen your will. It’s the only way that you’ll
really have energy and fighting spirit.
When it
comes to sharpening your will and serving others, you can do it
in a destructive fashion or in a creative fashion. Let’s look
at the sorts of choices that are available to you with this
Mars, starting with the more destructive possibilities.
If you
express the darker potential of your Mars, then your creative
urge comes out in an unhealthy way. Either you express it in a
way that hurts yourself or others, or you try to keep it from
coming out at all. You could act like a reckless hedonist, an
irritable faultfinder, or a fearful drudge.
If you act
like a reckless hedonist, then pursue pleasure without
adequately considering the consequences for yourself or others.
Though Virgo is a methodical, deliberate sign, Mars is naturally
impulsive, and the 5th house is associated with spontaneity.
Maybe you get into romantic relationships that lead to pain or
suffering. You have an extramarital affair, and then you have to
deal with the fallout when it comes to light. Maybe you drink
too much, or eat too much, or spend too much. You could take
unnecessary risks in search of thrills or in the course of being
creative. You work with chemicals, but you don’t wear a
protective mask. Suppose you’re a teenager. You and your
beer-drinking buddies decide it would be fun to play “chicken.”
You all wait on a railroad track for a train to come along, and
whoever waits the longest to jump out of its path wins the
game…if he doesn’t lose his life in the process. One way or
another, you become a dramatic example of how the desire for
pleasure can run amok and sour into dissipation and debauchery.
Maybe you lash out at others if they try to interfere with your
having fun and doing what you want, when you want. You seem
compelled to do things in the name of fun, but in fact, they
aren’t much fun at all.
If you act
like an irritable faultfinder, then you attack others for not
being perfect enough. Mars is naturally self-absorbed and with
this planet in the 5th house, you could turn excessive criticism
on your romantic partner, children, creative associates, or
recreational companions. You could become carping, combative,
and impossible to satisfy, to the point that no one wants to
play with you because it seems like too much work to try. When
it comes to choosing which creative risk to take (such as
hobbies to pursue, or people to date), you could reject one
possibility after another. You have such a keen sense of
imperfections that nothing seems worth taking on. It all seems
inadequate. Maybe your irritability has deep roots in the past.
For example, if you were raised by a parent who drank too much
and became abusive, then you might have grown up to become an
angry person with a chip on your shoulder.
If you act
like a fearful drudge, then you suppress your creative drive.
You see pleasure as being something evil. In that case, your
need for pleasure goes underground. You’re terrified at the
thought of losing self-control by acting spontaneously, and this
fear spills over into your attitude toward other people. You
object to them expressing themselves and doing things for the
sheer pleasure of it.
If you
express the brighter potential of your Mars, then you might act
like a brave servant, an energetic craftsperson, or a pioneering
martyr.
If you
behave like a brave servant, then you act boldly in spite of any
fear that you might be feeling, in ways that benefit others.
You’re outspoken but friendly, confident but warm, fiery but
upbeat. You’re the parent who adores her kids and spends as much
time as possible with them. You’re the activist who fights to
protect the environment or starts a political party. You’re the
professional who starts an association for people in your field.
One way or another, you rise to the occasion by unapologetically
asserting yourself in creative areas.
Like an
energetic craftsperson, you could throw yourself into developing
and using your skills with gusto. You lose yourself in the
moment, while you’re creating something that gives you pleasure.
You draw from the hidden wellspring of spontaneous
self-expression, and you pour it out like there’s no tomorrow.
You let yourself get caught up in the rapture of wanton
creativity. You willingly and intentionally express yourself
with a lack of self-consciousness. Doing this gives you the
psychic energy that you need to stay vibrant. As a child, maybe
you’re the natural leader on the playground or in recreational
activities. Perhaps you’re the writer with a biting humorous
style, or you’re the counselor who helps people heal their
“inner child.” Maybe you become the hotshot wheeler-dealer who
amasses a fortune as a corporate raider and empire builder.
If you act
like a pioneering martyr, then you willingly tolerate a lot for
the sake of contributing something new and useful. You take a
studious approach to expressing yourself creatively. Suppose you
want to become a professional chef. You enroll in a cooking
school, and you also study privately with experts in the field
to learn what you want to know. Virgo is a master of technique,
and Mars is a natural trailblazer, so you could become
forerunner in your creative pursuits. You’re the scientist who
develops a whole new way to treat illnesses. You’re the first
woman to become a jockey in professional horseracing or to fly
alone across the Atlantic Ocean. One way or another, you become
an exciting blend of the self-made individualist and the
ultimate engineer.
